Health benefits of the different tea varieties

We have much variety of tea available from green tea to chamomile tea and everything else in between. For a thousand years now, tea is considered as a key to good health in the East. And this has attracted many research works in the West. They began to discover the health benefits of the tea varieties available. The study of these plants has proved that they can aid in cancer, diabetes and heart diseases. Some varieties also help weight loss, decrease cholesterol and enable alertness. They also possess antimicrobial qualities.

Many brews are referred to as tea. But only green tea, black tea, Oolong tea, white tea, and Pu-erh tea is considered to the real tea by purists. Tea is derived from a plant called Camellia Sinesis.

  1. Green tea

Steamed tea leaves are used to prepare green tea. It possesses a high concentration of ECGC and is very widely researched and studied. The antioxidants present in green tea prevents the cancerous growth in bladder, breast, lung, stomach, pancreas, and colon. It also further prevents the clogging in arteries, burns fat, counter the oxidative stress levels on the brain, reduce neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Green tea also reduces stroke risk and maintain good cholesterol.

  1. Black Tea

It is made by using fermented leaves of tea. This has the highest caffeine levels and is the basis for many flavored teas such as Chai along with other instant teas. Research has depicted that lung damage caused by cigarette smoke could be protected by consuming black tea. It also lowers the chances of having a stroke.

  1. White tea

White tea is prepared by the uncured and unfermented tea leaves. Research shows that this tea had the high content of anticancer properties than in any other processed teas.

  1. Oolong tea

In one of the studies of animals, the animals that were given antioxidants from Oolong tea depicted low levels of bad cholesterol. The Wuyi, a variety of Oolong is highly marketed for weight loss. But this has not been backed by scientific evidence or claims.

  1. Pu-erh tea

This tea is made from tea leaves that are aged and fermented. It is considered as a black tea and the leaves are pressed in the shape of cakes. Research shows that the animals fed with Pu-erh had a lesser gaining of weight and lower LDL cholesterol.

These shrubs are native plants to India and China and consist of antioxidants known as flavonoids. It also contains caffeine and theanine that increases mental alertness. The content of polyphenol is very less when the tea leaves are more processed. Flavanoids also are part of Polyphenols. There is a lower polyphenol concentration in black tea and Oolong tea as they are either oxidized or fermented. Even though their polyphenol content is low, they have a high and powerful anti-oxidizing capacity.
